First Community Heroes win praise at Tiger’s match.

Hull City AFC’s first Community Heroes were joined at Friday’s match against Blackpool by the parents of the friend whose life they tried to save.

Jacob Richards and James Oliphant met up with Donna and Richard Fell before kick-off at the KC stadium.

Mr and Mrs Fell had nominated the teenagers for the Community Heroes award because of their efforts to give first aid to their son Josh when he collapsed while they were playing football together in June in Hornsea.

As winners of the Community Heroes award, the boys received ten tickets for the league game from sponsors Neil Hudgell Solicitors. Jacob and James shared the tickets with family and friends, some of whom have been raising money for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) a charity which helps screen youngsters who may be at risk of the condition which caused Josh’s death. Donna Fell said: “Josh was a mad keen Hull City fan and it was great to see Jake and James at the match. They’re just fantastic and it’s good to see they’re getting the recognition they deserve. It’s support from Josh’s friends that’s kept us going.” James, aged 15, said: “We’re really proud to get this award, it means a lot and it was good of Josh’s mum and dad to nominate us. “ Jacob, aged 15, said: “It was a fantastic game despite the result and it was good fun watching it with friends. Josh was such a great Hull City fan and he’s finally converted me. It’s strange him not being around, it’s hard for us all and it’s getting harder, but everyone’s there for each other. We go out every day and play football and now I’m always wearing my Hull shirt.”

Neil Hudgell, managing director of Neil Hudgell Solicitors, said that as well as Mr and Mrs Fell, many people had also nominated Jacob and James for the Community Heroes Award. Jacob and James had been playing football with Josh on the field at Hornsea School and Language College on the evening of Thursday June 9, 2011 when Joshua, aged 15, sat and then lay down after suddenly starting to feel tired and unwell. The other two boys first thought Joshua had gone to sleep but then realised he wasn’t conscious. Jacob, aged 14 at the time, immediately began first aid to try to revive Joshua. Jacob then showed James, also aged 14, how to continue CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) while he telephoned for an ambulance. However, despite the boys’ efforts, Joshua was later pronounced dead at Hull Royal Infirmary. Joshua died from Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS) where a serious disturbance in the heart’s rhythm causes cardiac arrest, even when the person’s heart has previously been healthy. Mrs Fell said that no matter what Jacob and James had done, they would not have been able to save her son but should be proud of the way that they acted to help. Donna and Richard Fell are aiming to raise £10,000 for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) so the charity can fund screening in the Hornsea area to pinpoint any youngsters that may be at risk of SADS. So far their campaign has raised £3,300 thanks to events including a sponsored cycle ride from Hornsea to Dalby Forest and stall and a tombola in Hornsea centre.
