“Champion” Cliff is a Christmas Community Hero

When Hull City play at home, Cliff Park is usually running a match-day car park to raise funds for charity, but this Saturday he will also be taking his seat on the inside of the KC Stadium, watching the Tigers take on Millwall.

Cliff, a volunteer at the Jubilee Church in Hull has been named as a Community Hero and, as a “thank you” for all his efforts to help others, has received four tickets for the Hull City AFC league tie courtesy of sponsors Neil Hudgell Solicitors, specialists in personal injury and medical negligence.

Since 2008, Cliff has raised thousands of pounds by organising a match day car park at the Jubilee Church on Walton Street, a stone’s throw from the KC Stadium. All the income is used to pay for an annual Fun Day, free to all the residents near the Church.

A keen football supporter, Cliff, who’s unemployed and studying to improve his job prospects, can’t afford to go to many matches.

Cliff said: “It’s a great feeling to be named as a Community Hero; it’s a real blessing, a great Christmas present and has given me a big boost.

“I’m really looking forward to Saturday and being able to watch the match and shout and cheer and not have to worry about how I’m going to pay for the tickets.

“It’s wonderful that I’m going to be able to take along some friends as well. It means I’ll be able to do what I enjoy doing – being with other supporters and sharing the occasion with them. That’s why I enjoy running the car park so much, I love chatting to other football fans.”

Cliff was nominated as a Community Hero by Steve Whittington, the pastor and manager of Jubilee Church.

Steve said: “Cliff has been a volunteer with our charity for over five years. He works tirelessly to serve the community centre we run. Although unemployed, Cliff has remained determined and is always willing to help and support others. He is a real champion!”

As well as organising the match day car park, Cliff runs a weekly coffee morning at the church attended by around 50 people who enjoy chat and support. He also helps at numerous other church activities and will be among those serving a Roast Lunch to homeless people on Christmas Day.

A Community Hero is an individual nominated by their friends, colleagues or family for the good work and the positive contribution they make to their local community.
