From the Costello Stadium to the Olympics: our latest Community Hero is a true sporting champion

Hull City AFC are delighted to announce former GB international athlete and team manager Pam Piercy as the Tigers’ latest Community Hero, Pam, who’s from Hull and now lives in Beverley, has been dedicated to athletics as both a competitor and a coach for more than 50 years.   She’s been involved in all levels of the sport: from the grassroots at Hull Achilles Athletics Club - where she still regularly takes training at the Costello Stadium and along the Humber Bridge -  to European and Olympic competition. 

Pam, who’s now 75, was nominated as a Tigers’ Community Hero by Jack Howey, a lifelong City fan, who is also a season ticketholder.  A Community Hero is an individual nominated by their friends, colleagues or family for the good work and the positive contribution they make to their local community.

Pam and her husband Bob, also a mainstay of Hull Achilles, will be guests at Hull City AFC’s home game against Bristol City on February 11 with tickets courtesy of club sponsor Neil Hudgell Solicitors, specialists in claims for personal injury and medical negligence.

The match will be Pam’s first opportunity to experience the KC Stadium.  Although she was on the project board during the stadium’s development she wasn’t able to attend the official opening due to athletics commitments.

Pam said: “It’s wonderful to be put forward as a Community Hero.  Although I don’t really like a lot of fuss or being the centre of attention, I’m really looking forward to the match and to seeing inside the KC Stadium.

“Bob and I have spent all our lives involved in athletics, we met at the Hull University track as teenagers and we just love the sport.  Even now that we’re semi-retired it keeps us going.”

The high point of Pam’s competitive career was in 1966 when she achieved fourth place in the 800 meters in the European Championships.  She then turned to coaching, firstly at her home club Hull Achilles and then also becoming Great Britain Athletics Team Manager from 1975 until 1990.  During that time she escorted the GB team to two Olympic Games: Los Angeles and Seoul.
Pam has coached many athletes to GB standards and her importance to the sport is shown by Linford Christie and Fatima Whitbread who both mention Pam in their autobiographies.
