Solicitors Buy Up Personal Injury Practice as Firms Look to Specialise Amid Legal Changes

18th August 2011

Neil Hudgell Solicitors has bought the entire personal injury practice of fellow Yorkshire law firm Ingrams.

The deal to transfer the personal injury caseload is part of Neil Hudgell Solicitors’ on-going expansion and will enable both firms to build business in their key areas of expertise.

Neil Hudgell Solicitors, which employs around 50 people at its offices in Hull and Leeds, are specialists in claims for personal injury and medical negligence with particular experience in brain injury and dental negligence cases. Ingrams, based in Hull and York, plan to focus on a broad range of services including wills, probate and conveyancing.

Neil Hudgell, managing director of Neil Hudgell Solicitors, said: “This type of purchase of a substantial personal injury practice is exactly the sort of acquisition we want to make to help us achieve growth. We’re keen to buy other personal injury practices, case loads and individual cases.”

Earlier this year, Neil Hudgell Solicitors launched a new business initiative http://www.webuyanyfiles.com as part of the firm’s strategy to expand organically and through acquisition. The firm has immediate access to capital funds to finance a quick and effective deal. Neil Hudgell Solicitors has already bought two practices outright and there are more acquisitions in the pipeline.

Paul Stott, Managing Partner of Ingrams Solicitors, said: “Personal injury work has been an integral part of Ingrams Solicitors’ services since the practice was established more than 10 years ago. However recent changes in the legal industry have brought about a change in our business strategy which has seen us enter into this agreement with Neil Hudgell Solicitors.

“Our clients are our primary focus, therefore this decision has been made safe in the knowledge that the high level of customer service they have received with us will continue under the care of Neil Hudgell Solicitors.

“Ingrams Solicitors will continue to offer a broad range of services including Wills, Trusts and Probate, Civil Litigation, Employment law, Debt Recovery and Residential and Commercial Conveyancing as part of our on-going business growth strategy.”

Neil Hudgell Solicitors and Ingrams are making the move towards greater specialisation at a time of change in the legal world. In October, the provision of legal services in England and Wales is set to alter radically with the introduction of Alternative Business Structures – ABS. This will mean that the ownership of legal service providers, currently restricted to lawyers, will be open to anyone deemed “fit or proper”. This could be an insurance company or a supermarket which is why the changes have been dubbed “Tesco Law”.

In addition, the full impact on the personal injury sector of the implementation of the recommendations put forward by Lord Justice Jackson in his report on Civil Litigation Costs is still being assessed across the legal industry.

Neil Hudgell was born and educated in Hull. He established his own legal practice In Hull in 1997, employing several University of Hull graduates. Neil Hudgell is a member of the Law Society Personal Injury Panel and of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers. Neil Hudgell Solicitors is also a member of the Brain Injury Group a specialist network of lawyers, medics and rehabilitation experts.
