Tracheostomy patient Jo plans to start swimming again

10th February 2012

Jo Roche

A woman from Bridlington who suffered life-changing injuries due to a surgeon’s errors is now planning to take up her favourite sport again.

Jo Roche, who is 42, breathes through a tube in her neck after her vocal chord nerves were damaged during a routine procedure to remove her thyroid gland.

Before the operation in February 2008, Jo enjoyed swimming up to five times a week but having a tracheostomy meant she had to stop her regular trips to the pool as getting water into the stoma in her neck could be fatal.

Now Jo is planning to undertake swimming lessons in Liverpool where she will be taught how to use special breathing apparatus.
Jo said: “I’ve really missed swimming, particularly with my children, and it’s been on my mind to try to start again.  It’s a great way to keep fit and I’m confident I should be able to get the hang of the swimming device.”

Jo, who has two children aged 16 and 13, suffered damage to her vocal chord nerves during an operation at Scarborough District General Hospital carried out by Mr Nayef El-Bhargouti.  After the surgery, she was unable to speak and had to undergo the tracheostomy to ensure she had a stable airway to enable her to breathe.  Last year, following a General Medical Council hearing, Mr El-Bhargouti was suspended from practising for 12 months.

Through Neil Hudgell Solicitors, Jo successfully claimed for medical negligence from Scarborough and North East Yorkshire NHS Trust.  She now plans to use some of the compensation she received to pay for the swimming training, the travel to Liverpool and the special breathing apparatus which costs around £250.

Jo’s lawyer, Simon Wilson of Neil Hudgell Solicitors, specialists in claims for medical negligence and personal injury, said: “I am very pleased that Jo is now planning to resume swimming again and that, along with her guts and determination, the compensation she’s received is helping her to get her life back to as near as possible to how it was before her injury.”

Jo is now taking part in a TV advert which features her claim for medical negligence and has chosen to speak out about her injuries at http://www.neil-hudgell.co.uk/case-studies/video-case-studies/joanne-roche.php
