Blood Clots
Blood clots are extremely common. Most people have heard of friends or relatives who have suffered blood clots on long haul flights but equally blood clots develop following surgery and usually result due to a period of immobility.
Because of this, blood clots are most common after orthopaedic surgery particularly knee surgery.
In many orthopaedic units it is standard to give blood thinning drugs following surgery to prevent blood clots during surgery but also to provide compression stockings for the same reason.
Unfortunately it is becoming more and more common that these steps are not being taken or medication is not dispensed as prescribed.
The blood clots can then spread to the lungs causing pulmonary emboli which ultimately can be fatal.
